ABOUT THE ARTIST
Emma Hitzman is a multidisciplinary artist raised in the rural Midwest whose practice has been shaped by her longstanding connection to Northeast Wisconsin, where she has lived and worked for most of her career. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts with a minor in Arts Management, emphasizing Gallery and Museum Practices, from the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay in 2016.
Working primarily through photography, Hitzman’s practice investigates themes of dormancy, cyclical transformation, and the subtle rhythms that exist between presence and absence. Her work explores the quiet intervals of change found in both organic and virtual ecologies, examining how natural systems and digital environments alike undergo periods of latency, renewal, and imperceptible evolution. Through carefully constructed imagery, she considers the ways landscapes, technologies, and memory preserve traces of what has been, while anticipating what is yet to emerge.
Hitzman’s work has been exhibited in local, regional, and national exhibitions, reflecting an ongoing engagement with contemporary photographic discourse. In addition to her studio practice, she has curated exhibitions throughout Wisconsin, contributing to the state’s arts community by developing exhibitions that foster dialogue between artists, audiences, and place. Her combined experience as both artist and curator informs a practice that is equally invested in creating images and cultivating spaces for meaningful visual conversation.
